Interdisciplinary students address sustainability with new gallery installations

5 Dec

Next week, Columbia’s Interdisciplinary Arts Department will present the final three Space and Place installations featuring the work of students in the Interdisciplinary Arts and Media MFA and Book and Paper Arts MFA programs.

Two of the exhibits, Gulp Away by Michelle Korte Leccia and The Clouds We Breathe by Trisha Martin, address environmental issues. Leccia addresses consumption and disposal by tracking soda cans to and from campus, while Martin focuses on the effects of coal-fired power plants in Chicago.

Both exhibits will be open from 3-7p this Thursday and Friday (December 8-9), next Monday and Tuesday (December 12-13), or by appointment. The opening reception will be held on the 13th, from 5:30-7:30p in the gallery space–the 2nd floor of 916 S. Wabash.

With an angle focused on sustainability and community, HOBOartlab is a small art collective with a big idea.

Each art showing HOBOartlab has supports a specific charity. Most charities they choose are local efforts with a community aspect. For example, in the past they have supported the Humane Society and the World Wildlife Foundation.

Their current show, Signs of Sustainability, is up at the Elephant Room Gallery at 704 S Wabash Ave. until January 8. (more…)
